Winifred in the championship!

I have been way behind in getting everything updated lately, but I wanted to make sure that we have at least a post mentioning that Winifred is playing Denton in the State Six Man Football Championship this coming Saturday in Denton.

It will be a big time in a little town, and should be a lot of fun. See you all there!

http://lewistownnews.com/articles/2009/11/18/news/doc4b045534e95f5479392392.txt

http://www.greatfallstribune.com/article/20091117/OPINION01/911170305/It+s+a+week+of+championships+for+area+high+school+ teams

Sports Spectacular

Catch the game on November 21

Roy-Winifred and Denton to square off for state championship

by News-Argus Staff

Published:
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 1:39 PM MST

In most parts of the Treasure State, sports fans will be focused on the 109th annual Cat-Griz game this Saturday afternoon in Bozeman.

But in Central Montana, that game will take a back seat to a clash between a pair of neighborhood rivals.

Denton is the place to be Saturday when the undefeated Trojans play host to the Roy-Winifred Outlaws in the State 6-Man Football Championship.

I was talking with (Denton Superintendent) Bill Phillips today and we were both saying how neat it is to have two Central Montana teams competing for a state championship, said Dustin Sturm, who serves as superintendent for the Roy and Winifred schools, and is also a proud parent to one of the Outlaws players. Its just a tribute to the kids, the schools and the parents who support the kids.

That sentiment is shared by many across the region.

It will be a very special weekend for both communities, said Wayne Edwards, who was a standout football player in Denton and later at Montana State University and who now runs the bank in his hometown.

Although their records are both excellent, the Trojans roll into Saturdays game as the favorite with home-field advantage and an unblemished (10-0) record. One of those victories came at the expense of Roy-Winifred in the last game of the regular season, by a score of 40-20.

But dont expect any of that to intimidate the Outlaws who come in to the game with an 8-2 record. Since losing to Denton, the Outlaws have hit the road and earned a reputation as giant killers. While Denton has enjoyed three straight playoff wins at home, Roy-Winifred has notched huge upsets against heavily favored Big Sandy in the quarterfinals and Hysham last Saturday.

A championship on Saturday will be the first in many years for either squad. Denton last won the 6-man title in 1990. Not to be outdone, Winifred claimed the crown the following year, in 1991. Since that time, both teams have had success in 8-man football, especially Denton, which appeared in state title games in 1991 and 1999. But neither squad has brought home a championship.

The good news this year is that the State 6-Man Football Champion will be won by a team from Central Montana. The bad news is that only one squad can claim the crown.

Be sure to check out the News-Argus Championship edition inside todays paper. The 8-page section will be jam-packed with photos, statistics, team history and an in-depth look at Saturdays title game.

Outlaws football team heading to semi-finals

The Winifred-Roy Outlaws beat the number one team in the state last weekend (Big Sandy) and now is heading to semi-finals against Hysham. This was such an exciting win for the boys and I'm thinking they stand a super chance of making the state championship game!

Winifred to receive stimulus funding

WINIFRED The town of Winifred will receive federal stimulus money to improve its wastewater collection system.

The funds are coming from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. The funds will be used to replace and rehabilitate existing sewer mains, eliminating the excessive infiltration of groundwater into the sewer system.

Removing groundwater infiltration will improve the system's performance and efficiency. The work also will save on the cost of future system improvements.

The town will receive $559,400 in stimulus funds from the Water Pollution Control State Revolving Fund for the project, among other loans.
Construction on the project is expected to be complete later this year.

http://www.greatfallstribune.com/article/20091017/NEWS01/910170310/ACROSS-the-BIG-SKY
Article with updates on pipeline and gas for Winifred

NorthWestern Energy will take the gas at the point southwest of Lewistown and distribute it wherever its pipelines go in Montana.

Thats according to Darryl Knight, operations manager for Kykuit Resources LLC, which is building the Winifred-Lewistown pipeline. Kykuit Resources LLC is based in Mentor, Ohio, with offices in the Bank Electric Building in Lewistown.

A Lewistown energy official said that NorthWesterns line goes from here to Billings. A main source of that firms natural gas comes from a field near Rygate, he said.

Knight said Kykuits pipeline extends from the Whiskey Ridge area of the Missouri Breaks northeast of Winifred to Winifred and then south to Christina, where it is linked to three more new wells, and from there goes south, just west of Hilger, to Hanover Road.

The pipeline crosses Hanover Road and goes west of Lewistown about a mile or two and crosses Highway 87 at Cottonwood Creek Road. Then it parallels Cottonwood Creek Road for two miles to a point on Moe Road where it connects to Northwesterns natural gas line.

Knight said he expects his line to go in before reconstruction of Highway 87 is finished in the Cottonwood Creek area.

We just have two miles to go and we will be done, said Knight. He added that his crews currently are laying the line along Cottonwood Creek Road.

Two-inch gathering lines have been put in to all of the natural gas wells in northern Fergus County. The gas then enters a four-inch line for the trip to Lewistown. It will pass through a new compressor station located 75 feet from the Winifred Highway at Christina.

There will be a second compressor station at Lewistown. These are needed, Knight said, to build up pressure in the line so the gas will flow. On the 25-mile route from Christina to Lewistown, the gas passes through a six-inch line.

We are in the process of forming Tatonka Natural Gas LLC, which will be our distribution company, said Knight. He said this company will install a distribution system in Winifred where many residents have expressed a wish to have natural gas service.

Right now the price of natural gas is so low it will save consumers money to switch to natural gas, he said.

Frank Carr, Winifred businessman and contractor, recently said Winifred homes are now heated by propane, wood and electricity.

Kykuit and its associated companies have invested so much money in Fergus County and have been so successful in finding new gas wells that the wells and pipeline have boosted Fergus from a third-class to a second-class county, according to Fergus County commissioners. Commissioners said once a county goes over $30 million valuation, it becomes a second-class county.

We hope to have the distribution system in Winifred installed within the next several months. Hopefully it will be done by the first quarter of 2010, Knight said. He added that lines also can be built to serve customers in Suffolk, Christina, Hilger and on south to Lewistown.

We will try to supply everyone along the route, said Knight.

Although Kykuit believes it has a good, steady supply of natural gas, the firm is convinced there is more where this came from, Knight said.

Were positive there are more natural gas deposits in this area. I dont want to say they are huge but theres more to be found there, said Knight.

He said he was speaking of the Winifred area. He added he does not know the potential of areas closer to Lewistown. None of the wells Kykuit, and its partner, Sleepy Hollow Oil and Gas LLC, also of Mentor, Ohio, have drilled has produced oil, although some have produced water, he said.

We have been able to build the pipeline so fast because the weather has been good and weve had tremendous cooperation of landowners. The Lewistown Municipal Airport Board also has been helpful. We will be crossing a little of their property, said Knight.

He explained that the two compressor stations will be small, self-contained structures 20 feet by 20 feet in size. The biggest structure Kykuit is constructing is a 12,000-square-foot operations headquarters just south of Winifred on Rose Creek Road. That building is visible from the Winifred Highway.

Great Plains Exploration LLC, another Mentor-based company, is a partner in the construction of that building, Knight said. He added that for now, Kykuit will maintain its offices in Lewistown but eventually may move its headquarters to the Winifred building.

Were hiring local personnel whenever we can, said Knight. We expect to have about seven employees for our operations here. This includes office, field and maintenance personnel.

http://lewistownnews.com/articles/2009/09/28/news/doc4ac0d027688bb838169917.txt

Asbjornson grew up in Winifred where his parents owned a business.

But Asbjornson is not involved with the warehouse and shop south of town, which is being built by Kykuit/Energy West as part of a natural gas pipeline development that includes new natural gas wells east and south of Winifred. The project includes the delivery of gas to Winifred residents.

At the center of all this activity is Frank Carr, of Winifred, prime contractor for all the projects sponsored by Absjornson. Carr also owns the Winifred Bar and Caf, the local gathering place for those who are working on the various projects.

We call it the new sign shop building, said Carr, referring to the 75-foot by 126-foot two-story structure which now dominates downtown Main Street. A mezzanine above main floor offices provides a second story in about a third of the building, Carr said.

Located at 211 Main St., the new commercial building was built at a cost of $600,000, the funds provided by Absjornson. Two businesses will be located in the building, a sign shop and tire store, and both are expected to move in this fall, Carr said.

Construction of the frame building took 10 months, and prior to that, site and concrete work took another seven to eight months, so Carr estimated it took about 18 months to build the structure.

Its the first new commercial building in Winifred in seven or eight years, Carr said. The last to go up was the Mobil building.

Another new building that is nearly complete is a house on Sixth Avenue to be rented to Winifred School teachers. The modern house has five bedrooms, three baths and a 28-foot by 28-foot garage.

Carr said he will be putting in a sprinkler system in the lawn and about 20 trees will be planted in the yard. The house is located in a five-unit subdivision owned by the school. Abjornson paid for the house through a donation to the school.

A second house will be built this fall near the old Flax Schoolhouse, which was moved into downtown Winifred and remodeled. The schoolhouse, complete with bell tower, will be furnished with period school furnishings and equipment and eventually it will be open to the public, Carr said. He added he hopes the Winifred Museum will operate the historic school. Outbuildings on the site include two privies and a teacherage.

Norm is planning to build at least one more teachers house, perhaps two, said Carr.

Absjornson also paid for the planting of more than 800 trees in Winifred. Most are blue spruce, Scotch pine and Norwegian spruce. About 100 non-evergreens were planted in the park.

Two years ago, hail hit them pretty hard and some have had to be replaced, said Carr. He added that about 30 will be replaced this fall and 40 or 50 more will be planted.

About 70 percent of the trees, located mostly in the park, cemetery and on the school grounds, have automatic sprinkler water and those trees are doing well. The rest have to be watered from a 2,200-gallon tank on a trailer and those dont do quite as well, Carr said. He said Absjornson paid for the watering vehicle.

When pilots land for the first time in Winifred, they are astonished to see the huge, modern hangar that Abjornson built at the airport. It is a structure one would expect to find at a much larger airport, said Carr.

To go with it, Abjornson has paid for the construction of a small aviation gas building nearby. This $80,000 project included installation of a double-hull tank. It provides credit card aviation fuel 24 hours a day, Carr said. This amenity is in addition to a new runway that was extended from 2,200 feet to 4,600 feet.

So far this summer, we have had three fly-ins of pilots from elsewhere, said Carr. He added that the big hanger houses six planes and all nine storage units in the hangar are full. This results in income to the city, which owns the airport, he said. Eventually, the city hopes the airport will become self-supporting, Carr added.

Also underway in Winifred is the construction of sidewalks on Main Street. Some sidewalks have been put in around town as well, but the current project focuses on Main Street, Carr said.

Plans to install curb and gutters have been put on hold, because to put those, in the streets would have to be paved or repaved.

As a result of all those projects, Carr said, he keeps a crew at work all the time. In the summer, he adds a couple of young people. In addition to his crews, Energy West has a five-man crew at work on its building.

Winifred benefits from the construction work as well as from the results of these projects. These workers come into the caf every day, said Carr.

http://lewistownnews.com/articles/2009/09/09/news/doc4aa80c9427880745467669.txt

Natural Gas - Pickens

All the work Pickens is doing on the national front could well be very good for natural gas in general ... which now appears to be a very good thing for Winifred as well:

Quote:

In one year, Pickens got Congress to take notice. Yesterday, Senators Orrin Hatch and Robert Menendez introduced a bill (co-sponsored by Majority Leader Harry Reid) that mirrors legislation working its way through the House. It would extend for 18 years tax credits for natural gas fuel, vehicle and infrastructure (gas stations of the sort Barack Obama supported as a senator) to get more natural gas vehicles into production.

Natural gas will take hold when there are pumping stations. To move that piece along, Pickens is targeting large companies with large fleets. It makes economic sense to replace aging gas vehicles with ones powered by cleaner natural gas.
AT&T Inc. has promised to spend $565 million over the next decade to buy 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles. At least $350 million of the investment will go toward purchasing 8,000 compressed natural gas vehicles. AT&T says it will help build about 40 compressed natural gas fueling stations.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=a4mWmZE00SSY
After the games ended at 2:30 a.m., a break was taken until 10 a.m. on June 27. The games continued until 9 p.m. that day. Following Saturdays competitions, a street dance was held in downtown Winifred. Exit 53, a band from Billings provided the entertainment. The games resumed again Sunday morning at 10 and ended around 4 p.m.

Weather was great, Frank Carr, organizer of the tournament, said of the weekend.

The Eagles Club team from Lewistown, with players from Missoula, captured the first-place prize. Second was achieved by the Pearl Snaps, a Winifred team with players from Sidney and Lewistown. The Brevig team, with players from Lewistown and Havre, took the third-place honors.

As a part of the tournament, a home-run derby was also held. Unfortunately, nobody succeeded in hitting the ball over the fence, but Garrett Carr won when his ball landed the closest. The Winifred 8th grade class ran concessions as a class fundraiser.

The money raised at this event goes to a college fund for Woody Roberts sons, Zack and Jordon. This fall, Zack will be able to take about $1,000 with him for school. Jordon will be a junior in high school this year. Approximately $700 was raised this year, and teams donated their winnings back as well.

Carr wants to thank Lewistown Rental for their partial donation of the lights used for Friday nights games. Next year, Carr is hoping to have 12 teams to fill the bracket.

Winifred Grocery

Our family (Dee and I, Julie and Brandon, Ben and Kirsten, and Duane) has agreed in principle to buy the Winifred Grocery from Dave and Tammy, and we will be finalizing the deal in mid-August.

We will be rolling out the message in a bigger way down the road, but I wanted to use this forum to pick the brains of people as soon as possible.

We have some ideas for some new things we'd like to do with the store, and we are in the process of determining how practical those ideas might be. In the meantime, though, we are best served by hearing from the customers of the store -- each of you.

So if you could make a wish list of new ideas for the store, what would they be? Would changes to the hours be helpful? Are there products you'd like to see the store carry that it doesn't currently? Are there additional services you think would benefit Winifred customers?

Anything at all that you can think of (no idea is too big or too small) that you would like to see, please just post it here or email me at bradbergum@yahoo.com.

We likely won't be able to get everything done at once, but we're hoping to make many changes, as requested by people in the community, over time. It will take some time to figure out if the changes are practical and if we can actually make them work, but none of that can happen until we hear the ideas.

And with that, we hope to see to it that the Winifred Grocery continues to serve Winifred well into the future, just as it has for as long as most of us can remember.
Airplane tourism business

The kind of business described in the article would actually be a pretty cool kind of business to run out of Winifred (especially since the airport is so nice now).

http://lewistownnews.com/articles/2009/06/29/news/doc4a424baa160fa738516161.txt

Obviously, a Winifred-based business would likely include a pilot that had a more ... how to describe it ... "real-world" perspective of the land and the area around Winifred and would be able to not only expose the tourists to the beauty of the area, but also give them some insights to the people who work the land and the community that is dependent upon the land. It would likely be so much more interesting and insightful to the tourist than simply a detatched conversation from the perspective of an "environmentalist" that lacks the broader view of the story of the land and the people of the area.

A guy could pick people up in Billings or Great Falls or Lewistown (or anywhere for that matter) by plane, fly them up to Winifred and give them a tour of the area by air, and then maybe even take them downtown or give them a tour of a working farm/ranch by wheeled transport so they come away with a broad amount of knowledge and insight. Then fly them back to wherever you picked them up when they were ready to leave (they could even stay a few nights in between).

This might even be the kind of thing that would appeal to some people with some deep pockets (which would allow for pricing that would make it well worth a guy's time to do this sort of thing).

Anyway, just an idea ... it makes a lot more sense to me for somebody from Winifred to make money on people sight-seeing the Winifred area than some outfit from elsewhere.
