Here's a topic I have wondered about ever since I was a kid, and now we have a venue to have a conversation about it tapping into all sorts of people with different insights on the topic.

Why isn't there any big dam on Dog Creek to create a nice large reservoir near Winifred?

It's frustrating that Dog Creek runs heavy for a month or so a year, and then just puddles up ... all that water long gone into the Missouri without providing much benefit at all to anyone.

I'm completely talking off the top of my head, but it seems like it wouldn't be that incredibly expensive or difficult to dam up Dog Creek just north of town (preferably in between a couple hills) and create a pretty nice reservoir roughly in the area of the old dump.

I know it would flood some land (which would add to the cost), but it would be a really nice recreation venue and would probably be a great source of water for irrigation within and around Winifred.

I realize there are issues with water rights, obtaining land, funding the construction, etc., etc., but with the water essentially untouched by anyone and just running into the Missouri during the few weeks that Dog Creek runs, it doesn't seem like it would be all that controversial a project from a water rights or environmental perspective.  If anything, this would be a huge benefit from an environmental perspective (especially if the dam was large enough to let at least some water flow year round downstream).

So now that I've laid that out ... where am I wrong, what am I missing, why wouldn't it be feasible ... or maybe what twists can you think of that would make it a much more feasible and practical idea?

Great question that I have always wondered.  Some concerns of mine are that North of Winifred you might let the dam catch some more creeks maybe like Rose and Taffy Creek adding to the water supply but wouldn't allow many ranchers left downstream to use the runoff supply for irrigation.  If the dam was further up like around Suffolk or Christina, would there be enough water to fill a dam and use runoff for irrigation downstream.  I guess the first question that needs to be answered is how much water does Dog Creek and each of its tributaries provide in each month of the year on average.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you could have filled a pretty large dam with the flow of dog creek in the past 3 weeks.  Seems like kind of a waste to send all that water down the Missouri.

Does anyone know if this is a project that has been seriously discussed at any point in the town's history?

You would think it would have, but I've never heard of it.

If it was done right, it could probably even be used for waterskiing, fishing, etc.  It would be a great addition to the town's recreation.

Just another thought on this point -- if a Dog Creek Reservoir near Winifred was developed, it could go a long ways toward solving some of the problems that Winifred has regarding water.  It would be drinking water, but water could certainly be pumped to town to irrigate yards, the park, the ballfields, etc.

And to answer the question going through everyone's mind ... yes, I am going to just keep posting wild and crazy ideas until the point that my posts are drowned out by everyone else's much better ideas.  I am anxiously looking forward to that day.  It will mean that this message board is finally getting enough people involved to make some things happen.

I love this idea and have to believe that it has at least been investigated at some time.  There must be enough water to at least do something of this nature.  It would be nothing but economically beneficial for the area.

something like this would make a huge difference in the look of our town.  Anyone know why Stafford's lake(lake Ed) has never been fixed? I assume it would be large enough to do some irrigation with around town.  I like the dog creek idea, but I assume it would be extremely costly.

Sigh ... sure would be great to have a huge reservoir filling up with all that water that's running down Dog Creek this week.

A guy can dream, can't he?
