I'm surprised nobody put any out in the HR competition on Sunday.  They were crushing them deep all day on Saturday.

High-flying action was prominent in Winifred last weekend at the third annual Woody Roberts’ Memorial Softball Tournament.

Nine teams, with players from Missoula, Butte, Billings, Havre, Lewistown, Winifred and Sydney, came to test their skill in the three days of competition.

The tournament started Friday, June 26, with play lasting into the wee-morning hours on Saturday. After the games ended at 2:30 a.m., a break was taken until 10 a.m. on June 27. The games continued until 9 p.m. that day. Following Saturday’s competitions, a street dance was held in downtown Winifred. Exit 53, a band from Billings provided the entertainment.  The games resumed again Sunday morning at 10 and ended around 4 p.m.

“Weather was great,” Frank Carr, organizer of the tournament, said of the weekend.

The Eagle’s Club team from Lewistown, with players from Missoula, captured the first-place prize. Second was achieved by the Pearl Snaps, a Winifred team with players from Sidney and Lewistown. The Brevig team, with players from Lewistown and Havre, took the third-place honors.

As a part of the tournament, a home-run derby was also held. Unfortunately, nobody succeeded in hitting the ball over the fence, but Garrett Carr won when his ball landed the closest. The Winifred 8th grade class ran concessions as a class fundraiser.

The money raised at this event goes to a college fund for Woody Roberts’ sons, Zack and Jordon. This fall, Zack will be able to take about $1,000 with him for school. Jordon will be a junior in high school this year. Approximately $700 was raised this year, and teams donated their winnings back as well.

Carr wants to thank Lewistown Rental for their partial donation of the lights used for Friday night’s games. Next year, Carr is hoping to have 12 teams to fill the bracket.
